Since opening in 1998, Il Gelatauro has been one of Bologna's premier gelaterias and has frequently garnered international attention. The London Observer once named Il Gelatauro's gelato as the "tastiest" in Europe, while The Times put it at number 9 on its list of 30 Things to Eat Before You Die. In addition to a positive write-up in the esteemed food magazine Gourmet, major figures of the food world have voiced their appreciation for Il Gelatauro, including California Cuisine pioneer Alice Waters and pastry chef and food blogger David Lebovitz.
The relationship between Il Gelatauro and Il Cinema Ritrovato started in 2012, when Gianni Figliomeni first offered specially created flavors to match the theme of the summer film festival. For this collaboration, now an annual event dubbed Il Gelato Ritrovato, Gianni modernizes recipes from a 1911 book by Enrico Giuseppe Grifone, one of Bologna's most prominent gelato makers of the early 20th century.
